Data communication is the transfer of data between devices by using an transmission medium. It can be done through wired media like twisted pair cable, coaxial cable, or wireless media such as optical fibers or radio waves. The data must be encoded, encapsulated, and transmitted by the device that is transmitting it, and then decoded and removed from the device receiving it. This process is similar in nature to analog signal transmission, however, it is more intricate and is focused on binary data (1s & 1s and).
To increase efficiencies within an organization, companies are using data communication to share information more effectively with dispersed users. For example, an automotive manufacturer had to relay information to 6’000 inexperienced and dispersed dealers of spare parts to align stock with demand and reduce waste products. This required communication through an unoptimized network for data transfer and the use of a mobile-based application that was difficult for non-technical users to navigate.
Effective data communication begins with understanding your audience and how they view the data. It involves creating visuals that support the story and providing context-based information. It is also about articulating data in a clear, concise narrative. It also involves tailoring content to the specific audience according to their level of hierarchy, technical proficiency, and interest level. In addition, it requires breaking the boundaries of creativity in order to make data communications more memorable and memorable.
